MELLITOFIX MET

Empagliflozin / Metformin — 30 Film-Coated Tablets

Product Description

Mellitofix MET is an oral antidiabetic medicine combining empagliflozin and metformin hydrochloride to help improve blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, alongside a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

Empagliflozin belongs to the sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor class. It helps the kidneys eliminate excess glucose through the urine. Metformin belongs to the biguanide class and primarily reduces glucose production in the liver while improving the body's response to insulin.

Together, these ingredients provide complementary mechanisms for managing blood glucose levels. Empagliflozin may also provide cardiovascular and kidney benefits in eligible patients, depending on their medical condition and the applicable product indication.

Indications and Benefits

Mellitofix MET may be prescribed for:

  • Type 2 diabetes management: Helps improve blood glucose control when used alongside diet and physical activity.
  • Complementary glucose-lowering effects: Combines reduced glucose production by the liver with increased urinary glucose excretion.
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction: Empagliflozin may reduce cardiovascular risk in eligible patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, depending on the approved indication.
  • Heart failure and kidney protection: Empagliflozin has demonstrated benefits in eligible patients with heart failure or chronic kidney disease; suitability depends on the patient's clinical condition and product labeling.

This medicine is not intended to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Recommended Use and Dosage

  • Take exactly as prescribed by the treating physician.
  • The appropriate strength and dosing schedule depend on current diabetes treatment, blood glucose control, kidney function, and individual tolerability.
  • Immediate-release empagliflozin/metformin combinations are generally taken with meals to reduce gastrointestinal adverse effects.
  • Do not change the strength, discontinue treatment, or combine it with other antidiabetic medicines without medical advice.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Kidney function: Assess renal function before starting treatment and monitor it regularly. This combination may not be suitable for patients with significant renal impairment.
  • Lactic acidosis: Metformin can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, particularly in patients with renal impairment or other risk factors.
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis: Seek urgent medical attention for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, or difficulty breathing, even if blood glucose is not markedly elevated.
  • Dehydration and low blood pressure: Empagliflozin increases urinary fluid loss. Maintain adequate hydration as advised by your healthcare professional.
  • Genital and urinary infections: Seek medical advice for burning urination, fever, genital itching, pain, or unusual discharge.
  • Hypoglycemia: Risk increases when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency: Long-term metformin use may reduce vitamin B12 levels; monitoring may be appropriate.
  • Surgery and fasting: Inform your healthcare team before surgery or prolonged fasting, as temporary treatment interruption may be necessary.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Consult your physician regarding treatment suitability.
