Medical Description

Orlistat 60 mg is indicated for weight management in overweight adults when used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and regular physical activity. Orlistat acts locally within the gastrointestinal tract by inhibiting gastric and pancreatic lipases, thereby reducing the absorption of approximately 25–30% of dietary fat. The unabsorbed fat is eliminated in the feces. Systemic absorption of orlistat is minimal.

Orlistat 60 mg is generally intended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 28 kg/m² or higher and should be used as part of a comprehensive weight-management program including dietary modification and exercise.

Dosage and Administration

Adults (≥18 years):

• Take one 60 mg capsule three times daily with each fat-containing main meal.
• The capsule should be taken immediately before, during, or up to 1 hour after the meal.
• If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose should be omitted.

Missed Dose:

• If more than 1 hour has passed after eating, skip the missed dose and continue with the next scheduled dose.
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Directions for Use

• Follow a nutritionally balanced, calorie-controlled diet in which approximately 30% of calories come from fat.
• Distribute daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein evenly across the three main meals.
• High-fat meals may increase gastrointestinal side effects.
• Regular physical activity is recommended to optimize weight loss outcomes.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not use Orlistat if you:

• Are allergic to orlistat or any component of the product.
• Have chronic malabsorption syndrome.
• Have cholestasis (impaired bile flow).
• Are pregnant.

Use with caution in patients with:

• Kidney disease or history of kidney stones.
• Liver disease.
• Diabetes mellitus.
• Thyroid disorders.
• Epilepsy.

Drug Interactions

Orlistat may reduce absorption or alter effects of:

• Cyclosporine
• Levothyroxine
• Warfarin and other anticoagulants
• Antiepileptic medications
• Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K)

A multivitamin supplement containing vitamins A, D, E, and K should be taken at bedtime or at least 2 hours before or after taking orlistat.

Possible Adverse Effects

The most common adverse effects are gastrointestinal and are related to unabsorbed dietary fat. These may include:

• Oily or fatty stools
• Flatulence with discharge
• Increased bowel movements
• Fecal urgency
• Abdominal discomfort
• Loose stools or diarrhea

Seek medical attention immediately if any of the following occur:

• Severe abdominal pain
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes
• Dark urine
• Signs of allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
• Symptoms of kidney injury or kidney stones.

Storage Conditions

• Store below 25°C or according to local labeling requirements.

• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the package.
