Description

Famotidine is an H2-receptor antagonist that reduces the production of gastric acid by blocking histamine H2 receptors on gastric parietal cells. By decreasing both basal and stimulated acid secretion, famotidine helps relieve symptoms associated with excess stomach acid and promotes healing of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders.

Mechanism of Action

Famotidine selectively and competitively blocks histamine H2 receptors located on gastric parietal cells, thereby inhibiting gastric acid secretion. It reduces both the volume and acidity of gastric secretions and is particularly effective in suppressing nocturnal acid production.

Indications

Famotidine is indicated for:

• Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
• Gastric and duodenal ulcers
• Erosive esophagitis
• Heartburn and acid indigestion
• Hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
• Maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence of ulcers in selected patients
