MUCOPHYLLINE ( BROMHEXINE HCL / ACEFYLLINE PIPERAZINE ) MUCOLYTIC & BRONCHODILATOR SYRUP 125 ML

Mucophylline® Syrup – Medical Description

Dosage form: Oral syrup

Active ingredients (per 5 mL):

  • Bromhexine hydrochloride: 4 mg
  • Acefylline piperazine: 100 mg

Pharmacologic class: Mucolytic and bronchodilator combination.

Description:
Mucophylline syrup is a combination preparation containing Bromhexine hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent, and Acefylline piperazine, a xanthine derivative with bronchodilator properties. The formulation is intended to improve respiratory mucus clearance while supporting airway relaxation. It is used in respiratory disorders associated with excessive or thick bronchial secretions and airway obstruction. Bromhexine reduces mucus viscosity, making secretions easier to expel, while Acefylline piperazine may help improve airflow by relaxing bronchial smooth muscles. Bromhexine and related mucolytic therapies are commonly used to improve mucociliary clearance in respiratory disease.

Therapeutic uses:

  • Productive cough with thick mucus
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Respiratory tract disorders associated with difficult-to-expectorate secretions
  • Bronchospasm-associated respiratory conditions
  • Airway diseases involving mucus retention

Mechanism of action:

Bromhexine hydrochloride

  • Depolymerizes and reduces viscosity of mucus secretions
  • Enhances mucociliary clearance
  • Facilitates expectoration of accumulated bronchial secretions

Acefylline piperazine

  • Xanthine derivative with bronchodilating activity
  • Helps reduce bronchial smooth muscle constriction
  • May improve airflow and respiratory function

Bromhexine has demonstrated mucolytic effects through alteration of mucus structure and stimulation of mucus transport mechanisms.

Possible adverse effects:
Common adverse reactions may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastric discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Mild palpitations
  • Restlessness
  • Skin rash or hypersensitivity reactions

Less common xanthine-related effects may include:

  • Tachycardia
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Nervousness

Important precautions and warnings:

  • Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to Bromhexine, xanthine derivatives, or formulation components.
  • Use cautiously in patients with:
    • Cardiac disease
    • Hyperthyroidism
    • Seizure disorders
    • Hepatic impairment
    • Renal impairment
  • Xanthine-containing medications may interact with other medicines affecting heart rhythm or central nervous system stimulation.
