MUCOTEC 300 MG ( ERDOSTEINE ) 20 CAPSULES

ERDOSTEINE – 150 mg Capsules / 300 mg Capsules / Oral Suspension

Active Ingredient: Erdosteine
Pharmaceutical Forms:
• Erdosteine 150 mg Capsules
• Erdosteine 300 mg Capsules
• Erdosteine Syrup / Oral Suspension
Pharmacological Class: Mucolytic / Expectorant agent
ATC Classification: R05CB15

Medical Description

Erdosteine is a mucolytic agent used for the management of acute and chronic respiratory disorders associated with excessive or thick mucus production. It works by reducing mucus viscosity and improving mucociliary clearance, helping patients clear airway secretions more effectively and facilitating expectoration. In addition to its mucolytic activity, erdosteine demonstrates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may contribute to improved respiratory function and symptom control in selected patients.

Mechanism of Action

Erdosteine is a prodrug that becomes pharmacologically active after hepatic metabolism. Active metabolites release sulfhydryl (thiol) groups that:

• Break disulfide bonds within mucus glycoproteins, reducing sputum viscosity and elasticity
• Improve mucociliary transport and facilitate mucus clearance
• Scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress
• Reduce inflammatory activity associated with respiratory disorders
• Demonstrate anti-adhesion effects that may enhance antibiotic penetration and activity in respiratory secretions

Indications / Uses

Erdosteine may be used for the symptomatic management of respiratory disorders associated with excessive mucus production, including:

• Acute bronchitis
• Chronic bronchitis
• Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with mucus hypersecretion
• Upper and lower respiratory tract conditions associated with difficult sputum expectoration
• Respiratory conditions requiring improvement of mucus clearance according to physician assessment

Dosage and Administration

Dosage should be individualized according to patient age, body weight, formulation, and physician recommendations.

Adults
• Erdosteine 300 mg capsules: commonly administered twice daily depending on indication and treatment duration
• Erdosteine 150 mg capsules: dosing may vary according to clinical needs and local prescribing information

Pediatric Patients
• Erdosteine syrup/oral suspension may be used according to age and body weight following healthcare professional instructions

Administration recommendations may differ according to regional product labeling and approved prescribing information.

Possible Side Effects
