MEBEFAC 200 MG SR ( MEBEVERINE ) 30 SUSTAINED RELEASE FILM-COATED TABLETS

Mebeverine Hydrochloride – Medical Description

Mebeverine hydrochloride is an antispasmodic medication used to relieve gastrointestinal smooth muscle spasms. It acts directly on the muscles of the intestine, helping to reduce abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and bowel discomfort without significantly affecting normal intestinal motility. Mebeverine is commonly prescribed for the symptomatic management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and related functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Indications

Mebeverine may be indicated for the symptomatic relief of:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Abdominal pain and cramping associated with intestinal spasm
  • Bloating and flatulence
  • Spastic constipation
  • Functional bowel disorders
  • Altered bowel habits associated with IBS, including diarrhea or constipation

Mechanism of Action

Mebeverine works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing intestinal spasms and relieving pain and discomfort. Unlike some antispasmodic agents, it generally does not produce significant anticholinergic side effects.

Dosage and Administration

Mebeverine 135 mg Tablets

  • Adults: One tablet (135 mg) three times daily.
  • Tablets are preferably taken 20 minutes before meals.

Modified-Release Capsules (200 mg)

Pediatric use: Mebeverine is generally not recommended for children under 18 years of age unless specifically prescribed by a healthcare professional.
