CLAUDICAT 100 MG ( CILOSTAZOL ) 30 TABLETS

Medical Description

Cilostazol is an oral antiplatelet and vasodilator medication primarily used to improve symptoms of intermittent claudication in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). It works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase III (PDE-3), which helps reduce platelet aggregation and relax blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow to the limbs.

The medication is commonly prescribed to help patients walk longer distances with less leg pain caused by poor circulation. Some clinical studies have also evaluated cilostazol for secondary stroke prevention and cardiovascular protection in selected patients.

Mechanism of Action

Cilostazol increases cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels by inhibiting PDE-3, leading to:

  • Inhibition of platelet aggregation
  • Vasodilation of blood vessels
  • Improved arterial blood flow
  • Enhanced oxygen delivery to tissues

Common Medical Uses

  • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
  • Intermittent claudication (leg pain during walking)
  • Improvement of walking distance and circulation
  • Investigational or adjunctive use in secondary stroke prevention in some regions

Common Side Effects

Possible side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Increased heart rate
  • Abnormal stools

Important Warning

Cilostazol should generally not be used in patients with heart failure because PDE-3 inhibitors may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular complications in these patients.

Patients should inform their physician about any history of heart disease, bleeding disorders, liver disease, or other medications they are taking before starting treatment. Do not stop or change the dose without consulting your healthcare provider.
