Risedronate sodium is a prescription medication belonging to a class called bisphosphonates, used primarily to strengthen bones and prevent fractures. It is most commonly known by the brand names Actonel and Atelvia. 

Common Uses

  • Osteoporosis Treatment & Prevention: Prescribed for postmenopausal women and men to increase bone mass and reduce the risk of hip or spinal fractures.
  • Steroid-Induced Bone Loss: Used for individuals taking long-term corticosteroid medications (like prednisone) which can weaken bones.
  • Paget's Disease: Treats this condition where bones become soft, weak, or misshapen. 


How to Take It (Critical Instructions)
To ensure the medicine is absorbed correctly and to avoid irritating the esophagus (throat), you must follow these strict rules: 

  • Morning Timing: Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (except for the delayed-release version, which is taken after breakfast).
  • Water Only: Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass (6–8 oz) of plain water. Do not use coffee, juice, or mineral water.
  • Stay Upright: Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it. You must remain sitting or standing upright.
  • Wait to Eat: Do not eat, drink anything else, or take other medications for at least 30 minutes after your dose.

Common Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and headaches.
Serious Chest pain, new/worsening heartburn, or pain when swallowing (seek medical help immediately).
Rare Risks Jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis), unusual thigh bone fractures, or severe muscle/joint pain.
