MICONAZ 2% SPRAY ( MICONAZOLE ) — SPRAY POWDER 60 ML

MICONAZ 2%

Miconazole Nitrate 2%

Liquid Spray / Spray Powder – Topical Antifungal

Medical Description

MICONAZ 2% contains miconazole nitrate 2%, a topical imidazole antifungal agent used for the treatment of common superficial fungal infections of the skin.

The liquid spray and spray-powder formulations provide convenient topical application, particularly for affected areas where a non-greasy preparation is preferred or where coverage of larger or hairy areas is required.

Miconazole is clinically used against dermatophytes and susceptible yeasts responsible for conditions such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), ringworm (tinea corporis), and superficial cutaneous Candida infections.

Active Ingredient

Miconazole nitrate 2% w/w

Pharmacological class: Topical imidazole antifungal.

Indications

MICONAZ 2% may be used for the topical treatment of susceptible superficial fungal infections, including:

  • Tinea pedis (athlete's foot)
  • Tinea cruris (jock itch)
  • Tinea corporis (ringworm)
  • Superficial cutaneous candidiasis
  • Other susceptible superficial fungal infections, when appropriate according to clinical diagnosis and the specific product labeling.

Mechanism of Action

Miconazole inhibits fungal ergosterol biosynthesis, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. Disruption of membrane formation and integrity interferes with fungal growth and viability.

Miconazole belongs to the imidazole class of antifungal agents and acts primarily at the site of topical application.

Clinical Benefits

  • Provides topical antifungal activity against common dermatophytes and susceptible yeasts.
  • Helps treat superficial fungal infections of the skin.
  • May relieve symptoms associated with fungal infection, including itching, burning, scaling, redness, cracking and discomfort.
  • The spray and spray-powder formats can be useful for moist, interdigital, hairy or relatively extensive skin areas, where convenient coverage and reduced occlusion may be desirable.

Dosage & Administration

For external use only.

  1. Clean the affected area and dry thoroughly before application.
  2. Apply a thin, even layer of the liquid spray or spray powder over the affected skin.
  3. Topical miconazole is generally applied twice daily, usually in the morning and evening, unless otherwise directed by a healthcare professional.
  4. For athlete's foot, carefully treat the spaces between the toes.
  5. Continue treatment for the recommended duration even if symptoms begin to improve, according to the product labeling or healthcare professional's instructions.
  6. Keep the affected area clean and dry, and avoid conditions that promote moisture accumulation.

For OTC topical miconazole products, symptoms of jock itch are generally expected to improve within approximately 2 weeks, while athlete's foot and ringworm may require up to approximately 4 weeks. Medical evaluation is recommended if symptoms do not improve within these periods or worsen at any time.

Important Warnings & Precautions

  • For external use only.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes.
  • Do not swallow or inhale the product.
  • Do not apply to the scalp or nails unless specifically prescribed for that purpose.
  • Do not use on children under 2 years of age unless directed by a physician.
  • Discontinue use and seek medical advice if significant irritation, hypersensitivity or worsening occurs.
  • Seek medical evaluation if there is no improvement within the expected treatment period.
  • Correct diagnosis is important before initiating topical antifungal treatment.

Additional Precaution for Spray Formulations

Some miconazole liquid sprays and spray-powder aerosols are pressurized and extremely flammable.

  • Keep away from heat, sparks, flames and smoking.
  • Do not spray near an open flame or ignition source.
  • Do not puncture, crush or incinerate the container.
  • Do not expose pressurized aerosol containers to excessive temperatures.
  • Avoid deliberately concentrating or inhaling the aerosol contents.

Possible Side Effects

Topical miconazole is generally well tolerated. Possible local reactions may include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Skin discomfort
  • Dryness or other local application-site reactions
  • Allergic/contact dermatitis, rarely

WHO references also identify local irritation and allergic contact dermatitis among possible adverse effects of topical miconazole.

Drug Interactions

Because topical miconazole is primarily applied locally, clinically significant systemic drug interactions are generally less common than with oral antifungal therapy.

However, patients taking warfarin or other medicines with a narrow therapeutic index should inform their healthcare professional before prolonged or extensive topical use, particularly when treatment involves large areas or damaged skin.

Use During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be based on medical advice, particularly when treatment involves extensive areas, prolonged therapy or damaged skin.

Avoid applying the product to the breast immediately before breastfeeding unless specifically instructed by a healthcare professional.

Storage

  • Store according to the manufacturer's labeled temperature requirements.
  • Keep the container tightly closed when not in use.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • For aerosol spray/powder products, protect from excessive heat and do not expose to temperatures above the temperature specified on the product label.

Key Product Advantages

MICONAZ 2% Liquid Spray / Spray Powder offers:

  • 2% miconazole nitrate antifungal activity
  • Convenient topical application
  • Useful for common superficial fungal skin infections
