PABAL RTS 100 MCG/ ML ( CARBETOCIN ) SOLUTION FOR IV / IM INJECTION 5 AMPOULES
Medical Description: Carbetocin
Carbetocin is a long-acting synthetic analogue of the natural hormone oxytocin with uterotonic and anti-hemorrhagic activity. It acts by binding to oxytocin receptors on uterine smooth muscle, stimulating sustained uterine contractions that help increase uterine tone and reduce blood loss after childbirth. Because of its longer duration of action compared with oxytocin, a single dose can provide prolonged uterine contraction support.
Therapeutic Indications
- Prevention of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), especially hemorrhage related to uterine atony after delivery.
- Commonly used after cesarean section and in selected vaginal deliveries according to institutional protocols and guideline recommendations.
Mechanism of Action
Carbetocin activates peripheral oxytocin receptors located in the myometrium (uterine muscle), producing:
- Increased uterine tone
- Increased frequency and strength of contractions
- Reduced excessive postpartum bleeding
Pharmacologic Characteristics
- Long-acting oxytocin receptor agonist
- Longer half-life than oxytocin (approximately 4–10 times longer)
- Usually administered as a single intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) dose rather than prolonged infusion
Common Adverse Effects
Possible adverse effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Abdominal pain
- Flushing
- Dizziness
- Hypotension
- Transient tachycardia
Key Clinical Notes
A heat-stable formulation of carbetocin is available and may be useful in settings where refrigeration is limited. Evidence suggests carbetocin can reduce the need for additional uterotonic interventions in some obstetric settings.
Patient Disclaimer:

Carbetocin should only be administered under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals. Patients should consult their physician, obstetrician, or pharmacist regarding individual medical conditions, pregnancy-related concerns, or treatment decisions.
