Medical Description

Dexamethasone 0.75 mg is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid used primarily for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It reduces inflammatory responses and modifies immune-system activity, making it useful in a range of inflammatory, allergic, autoimmune, and other corticosteroid-responsive conditions.

Dexamethasone is available as an oral tablet in several strengths, including 0.75 mg. The appropriate strength and treatment duration depend on the condition being treated and the patient's clinical response.

Therapeutic Uses

Dexamethasone tablets may be prescribed for selected corticosteroid-responsive conditions, including:

Severe allergic conditions that have not responded adequately to conventional therapy.
Certain inflammatory skin disorders, including severe atopic or contact dermatitis.
Selected respiratory conditions such as severe asthma.
Certain rheumatologic, autoimmune, hematologic, renal, gastrointestinal, ocular, and endocrine disorders.
Certain malignant diseases, where corticosteroids may be used as part of a specialist treatment regimen.
Other conditions in which systemic corticosteroid therapy is clinically indicated.

How It Works

Dexamethasone binds to glucocorticoid receptors and alters the expression of genes involved in inflammation and immune responses. This results in suppression of inflammatory mediators and reduction of swelling, redness, pain, and other manifestations of inflammation. It has relatively little sodium-retaining activity compared with hydrocortisone at equivalent anti-inflammatory doses.

Dosage & Administration

The dose of dexamethasone is individualized according to the disease, severity, duration of treatment, and patient's response. Therefore, the 0.75 mg tablet should be taken only according to the prescribing physician's instructions.

Patients should not increase, decrease, or change the frequency of dosing without medical advice. Dexamethasone should not be discontinued abruptly after prolonged or high-dose treatment, because corticosteroid withdrawal and adrenal insufficiency can occur; the dose may need to be gradually reduced under medical supervision.

Important Warnings & Precautions

Because dexamethasone suppresses immune and inflammatory responses, it may increase susceptibility to infections, worsen existing infections, or reactivate certain latent infections. Patients should inform their physician about any current or previous significant infection before treatment.

Caution and appropriate monitoring may be required in patients with:

Diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.
Hypertension or cardiovascular disease.
Osteoporosis.
Glaucoma or other eye disorders.
A history of psychiatric disorders.
Peptic-ulcer disease or significant gastrointestinal disorders.
Tuberculosis or other significant infections.
Conditions requiring vaccination or exposure to infectious diseases.

Corticosteroids may increase blood glucose levels, and prolonged therapy may be associated with complications such as osteoporosis, cataracts, glaucoma, hypertension, fluid retention, psychological effects, and increased risk of infection.

Contraindications

Dexamethasone tablets are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to dexamethasone or any component of the formulation and, according to the product labeling, in patients with systemic fungal infections, unless specifically indicated under appropriate specialist management.

Possible Side Effects

Potential adverse effects vary with dose and duration. They may include:

Stomach irritation, nausea, or vomiting.
Headache, dizziness, restlessness, or insomnia.
Mood changes, anxiety, or depression.
Increased blood glucose.
Increased appetite and weight gain.
Fluid retention and increased blood pressure.
Easy bruising, acne, or skin changes.
Muscle weakness.
Menstrual irregularities.
Increased susceptibility to infections.

Longer-term corticosteroid treatment can increase the risk of osteoporosis, cataracts, glaucoma, adrenal suppression, impaired wound healing, and other systemic complications.

Drug & Treatment Considerations

Patients should inform their healthcare professional about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vaccines, and supplements they are using. Dexamethasone can interact with various medicines, and its effects may be clinically important in patients receiving treatments that affect blood glucose, immunity, blood pressure, or infection risk.

Special Note

Dexamethasone is a prescription corticosteroid, not a general-purpose painkiller or routine treatment for minor inflammation. Its benefits and risks should be assessed individually, particularly when treatment is prolonged or repeated.
