MUCOSOL® Pediatric Syrup – Medical Description

Dosage form: Pediatric oral syrup, 120 mL

Active ingredient:

• Carbocisteine: 125 mg/5 mL

Pharmacologic class: Mucolytic agent.

Description:
MUCOSOL Pediatric Syrup contains Carbocisteine, a mucolytic medication used in children for respiratory tract conditions associated with excessive, thick, or viscous mucus secretions. Carbocisteine helps modify mucus structure, making secretions less thick and easier to remove from the respiratory tract through normal mucus clearance and productive coughing. It is used as adjunctive treatment in respiratory disorders characterized by mucus retention.

Therapeutic uses:

• Productive cough associated with thick mucus
• Acute bronchitis
• Chronic bronchitis with mucus accumulation
• Respiratory tract disorders with difficult-to-expectorate secretions
• Adjunctive management of respiratory conditions involving excessive mucus production

Mechanism of action:

• Mucolytic activity: Reduces mucus viscosity and elasticity.
• Mucoregulating effect: Helps normalize bronchial mucus composition.
• Improved mucociliary clearance: Facilitates elimination of respiratory secretions and improves mucus transport.

Carbocisteine acts by altering mucus glycoprotein composition, leading to less viscous secretions that can be cleared more effectively from the airways.

Possible adverse effects:
Common adverse reactions may include:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Abdominal discomfort
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Skin rash or allergic reactions

Less common but potentially significant adverse reactions:

• Gastrointestinal bleeding
• Worsening of peptic ulcer disease
• Severe hypersensitivity reactions

Important precautions and warnings:

• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to Carbocisteine or any formulation component.
• Carbocisteine-containing products are generally contraindicated in children below 2 years of age because young children may have limited ability to clear increased respiratory secretions.
• Use cautiously in children with:
  • History of gastrointestinal ulcer disease
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Severe kidney impairment
• Persistent cough with fever, wheezing, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or blood-stained sputum requires medical evaluation.
