MUCOGEL® Antacid – Medical Description

Dosage form: Oral suspension
Active ingredients (per 5 mL):

• Aluminium hydroxide: 309.83 mg
• Magnesium hydroxide: 100 mg
• Oxethazaine (Oxetacaine): 10 mg

Pharmacologic class: Antacid with local anesthetic activity.

Description:
MUCOGEL is an oral antacid suspension used for symptomatic relief of acid-related gastrointestinal conditions. The combination of aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide works by neutralizing excess gastric acid, reducing stomach acidity and relieving symptoms such as heartburn, acid indigestion, epigastric discomfort, and hyperacidity. Oxethazaine (oxetacaine) acts as a local anesthetic, helping reduce pain and burning sensations associated with gastritis or gastric irritation. Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium salts are commonly used for relief of heartburn and gastric hyperacidity symptoms.

Therapeutic uses:

• Heartburn
• Acid indigestion
• Hyperacidity
• Gastritis-associated discomfort
• Dyspepsia
• Gastric burning sensation associated with excess acid

Mechanism of action:

• Aluminium hydroxide: Neutralizes gastric acid and may reduce pepsin activity.
• Magnesium hydroxide: Neutralizes stomach acid and contributes to rapid symptom relief.
• Oxethazaine (Oxetacaine): Produces local anesthetic effects on the gastric mucosa to decrease pain and irritation.

Possible adverse effects:

• Constipation (more commonly associated with aluminum salts)
• Diarrhea (more commonly associated with magnesium salts)
• Nausea
• Abdominal discomfort
• Long-term or excessive use may contribute to electrolyte disturbances or increased risk of complications, particularly in patients with impaired kidney function.

Precautions and interactions:

• Use cautiously in patients with kidney disease.
• Antacids may interfere with absorption of other medications (including some antibiotics, iron preparations, and supplements); separating administration by approximately 2–4 hours may reduce interactions.
• Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only under healthcare professional guidance.
