OPTIVE LUBRICANT EYE DROPS ( CARMELLOSE SODIUM 5MG/ ML + GLYCERIN 9MG/ ML ) 15 ML

Carmellose sodium + Glycerin is a dual-action lubricating eye drop solution used to treat dry eyes. It works as artificial tears to relieve burning, irritation, and discomfort by hydrating the eye surface and lubricating it, often protecting against further irritation.
  • Lubrication (Carmellose Sodium): Also known as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), this cellulose derivative has high viscosity and mucoadhesive properties. It binds to human corneal epithelial cells, mimicking the natural mucin layer to stabilize the tear film and reduce friction during blinking.
  • Osmoprotection (Glycerin): In dry eyes, tears often become hyperosmolar (too salty), which damages the ocular surface. Glycerin acts as an osmoprotectant, drawing water into the corneal and conjunctival cells to maintain hydration and protect against damage from high salt concentrations.
Clinical Efficacy
Research published in journals such as Clinical Ophthalmology and The Ocular Surface indicates:
  • Symptom Improvement: Clinical trials show significant reductions in the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores, indicating better relief from burning and grittiness compared to CMC alone.
  • Tear Stability: Use of this combination has been shown to improve the Tear Film Break-up Time (TBUT) and reduce corneal staining, which are objective measures of eye health.
  • Post-Operative Use: It is frequently used to manage dry eye symptoms after LASIK and cataract surgery, facilitating corneal epithelial wound healing.
Safety Profile
  • General Safety: Both ingredients are widely recognized as safe for over-the-counter use.
  • Adverse Reactions: The most common reported side effects are transient blurred vision immediately after application and mild, temporary eye irritation.
  • Preservatives: While multidose bottles may contain preservatives (like Purite®), preservative-free versions are specifically recommended for patients using drops more than four times daily or those with sensitive eyes to avoid further surface damage.
