Important Precautions & Warnings

• For external/topical use only.
• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to silver sulfadiazine, sulfonamides, or any component of the formulation.
• Silver sulfadiazine should generally not be used in premature infants or newborns during the first 2 months of life, and is contraindicated in women who are near term because of the potential risk of kernicterus.
• Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be determined by a healthcare professional according to the clinical situation.
• Caution is warranted in patients with G6PD deficiency, because hemolysis may occur in susceptible individuals.
• Large-area application, particularly over extensive burns, may increase systemic absorption; patients with extensive wounds may require medical monitoring.
• Silver sulfadiazine can occasionally cause local irritation, rash or hypersensitivity reactions. Rare but serious sulfonamide-associated reactions are possible.
• Prolonged use can be associated with fungal proliferation/superinfection, although clinically reported fungal superinfection is uncommon.
• Silver sulfadiazine may affect some topical enzymatic wound treatments because silver can inactivate certain enzymes.

When Medical Attention Is Needed

Seek prompt medical assessment for:

• Deep, extensive or circumferential burns.
• Burns involving the face, eyes, hands, feet, genital area or major joints.
• Increasing redness, swelling, warmth, pus, foul odor or worsening pain.
• Fever or other signs of systemic infection.
• Wounds that fail to improve or show progressive tissue damage.
• Any significant allergic reaction such as widespread rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing.

The WHO emphasizes that significant burns require appropriate medical assessment and that topical medication should not replace proper burn-care management.
