Two Flavor Options

Dosage form: Medicated lozenges
Active ingredient: Ambroxol Hydrochloride 20 mg per lozenge
Available variants:

  • Ambropro 20 mg Lozenges – Mint Flavor.
  • Ambropro 20 mg Lozenges – Sugar-Free Orange Flavor.

Therapeutic category: Throat preparations / Local analgesic and mucolytic agent.

Product Overview

Ambropro 20 mg Lozenges contain ambroxol hydrochloride, an active ingredient with local anesthetic properties that helps relieve pain and discomfort associated with acute sore throat.

The lozenges dissolve gradually in the mouth, delivering the active ingredient locally to the throat. Ambroxol helps reduce throat pain and irritation, making swallowing more comfortable.

Available in refreshing mint and sugar-free orange flavors, Ambropro provides two flavor options for convenient throat relief.

Active Ingredient and Mechanism of Action

Ambroxol Hydrochloride 20 mg

Ambroxol is a medicinal agent with local anesthetic (local pain-relieving) properties. It helps relieve sore throat discomfort through the following mechanisms:

  • Local pain relief: Acts on voltage-gated sodium channels in sensory nerve fibers, reducing the transmission of pain signals from the throat.
  • Relief of throat irritation: Helps alleviate painful sensations such as burning, scratchiness, and discomfort during swallowing.
  • Local anti-inflammatory activity: Experimental studies suggest that ambroxol has additional anti-inflammatory properties, although these should not be interpreted as proof of a clinically significant anti-inflammatory effect from lozenges.

The lozenge formulation allows gradual dissolution in the mouth, providing local exposure to the active ingredient.

Indications and Benefits

Ambropro 20 mg Lozenges are indicated for the symptomatic relief of acute sore throat.

Potential therapeutic benefits include:

  1. Relieves Acute Sore Throat: Helps reduce pain and discomfort associated with acute pharyngitis.
  2. Eases Painful Swallowing: Helps make swallowing more comfortable by reducing throat pain.
  3. Soothes Throat Irritation: Helps alleviate burning, scratchiness, and throat discomfort.
  4. Provides Local Anesthetic Action: Helps reduce the transmission of pain signals from sensory nerves.
  5. Convenient Throat Relief: Gradually dissolves in the mouth, allowing local delivery of the active ingredient.

Clinical studies have investigated ambroxol 20 mg lozenges and demonstrated pain-relieving benefits in acute uncomplicated sore throat. However, results have varied between formulations, and not every clinical trial demonstrated superiority over placebo.

Dosage and Administration

According to the Egyptian Drug Authority's 2026 National Drug Formulary:
